This House Head speaks about an ongoing debate about the DJ. Is this wonderful craft a career or merely a hobby? This was addressed by a DJ who posted this quote his Facebook timeline. “I DJ and it is not a hobby!” There were comments made on his statement. Here were some:

“It is not a job; it is an awesome career!”

“It has been my J.O.B. since age 13….”

“Seriously, what is wrong with DJing being a hobby? Is this how it started for most of you? Before it was for you, i.e. the money, you did it for the love.”

Let us start this by defining what a hobby vs. a career is.

Hobby: a pursuit outside one’s regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation

Career: a field for or pursuit of consecutive progressive achievement especially in public, professional, or business life <Washington’s career as a soldier> or a profession for which one trains and which is undertaken as a permanent calling <a career in medicine> <a career diplomat>

Webster state hobbies are occupations for relaxation while careers are train professionals undertaking a permanent calling. In other words careers are well paid professionals and hobbies are not.

House Head Speaks: This statement may not count for I am not a DJ. What I have experience with DJ/Producers; they take their profession very seriously. For those who treat the art of DJing as a hobby, you chose that route. Don’t get upset when your peers are receiving paid gigs and travel the world doing what they LOVE. Let us not kid ourselves. If DJ is a hobby, everybody would do it. We all cannot be Doctors, Lawyers or Accountants. The statement applies to becoming a DJ. We all forget this one fact: DJs entertain people. If memory serves, ENTERTAINERS GET PAID!!

There is no harm in receiving payment for what you love to do. That is the goal of anyone who pursuits a career. This is a natural thing. DJs like Frankie Knuckles, Louis Vega, Maurice Joshua, Gent Hunt, Jamie 3:26, Paul Johnson and others are proof DJs is a serious career. Go out and get yours! This House Head Has Spoken!!

South African born DJ/Producer Kimesh Desai aka Camouflage now residing in Florida USA after having lived in London UK is an artist dedicated to a cause towards House Music. An energetic DJ constantly improving his talents and an ambassador for the scene has been actively involved since 1997. With over 15 years involvement, Camouflage has worked himself from the dance floors of Johannesburg where he spend many weekends absorbing the unity and love of House Music and then moving to London in 2003. It was not before long that Camouflage acquired a pair of turntables and a mixer and began a whole new journey into the sound of House Music.

Once in London, there was no stopping the passion fueled from the scene back in South Africa and Camouflage began finding ways to enter the scene in London by attending various parties and nights being held and acquired gigs at many of London’s Leading Nightclub such as PACHA and MINSISTRY OF SOUND through Dirtydubbin and also landed a residency in 2007 at the well renowned island of IBIZA. With many of these great venues and parties, Camouflage gained extensive knowledge and decided to venture into a whole new avenue for the love of the music. This was to create a lifestyle from House Music as this led to the many great opportunities for Camouflage himself and it was time to share the love. This led to the beginning of CHICAGO HOUSE FM (CHFM).

CHFM started in September 2008 right after leaving Ibiza and once back in the UK, Camouflage began the first show. After many weeks of continuous support and success a second show began and by the end of 2 months running, CHFM had 6 shows running live from Scotland, London, Eastbourne and Manchester. This had opened up a whole new world of unity and love based on the music and things started falling into place for CHFM.

With the success of CHFM by this time more doors opened up for Camouflage and he began to play outside of London and played Manchester, Bristol, Eastbourne, Leeds and many other places in the UK and then also went on and played in Bulgaria, France and South Africa. While spreading the CHFM gospel, Camouflage started seeking more within the music and this led to his venture into the world of production.

Having very little music knowledge and armed with just that of being a DJ, the passion took Camouflage to a whole new dimension of music and with persistence he landed his first release in 2008 on Flexual Records (South Africa). After the first release he began to spend more time on the radio and focus on CHFM and has since landed releases on GUESTHOUSE, TANGO, FLAPJACK, PHOBIC, DEEPFUNK, FUNKFIELD as well as recording a mix for OM RECORDS which reached the top 10 at Beatport the industry’s leading download site. Camouflage has gained the support of the industries big hitters such as DJ Sneak, DJ DAN, TERRY MULLEN, GIOM, SONNY FODERA, COLETTE, HEATHER, MARK FARINA, KINKY MOVEMENT, INLAND KNIGHTS and many others.

Camouflage then moved to the USA (Florida) after meeting his wife and this led to the greater uprising of CHFM. Having spent 3 years already in the USA Today CHFM has over 60 DJS from across the globe and over 100,000 listeners worldwide. CHFM now hosts shows in USA, UK, Europe and South Africa and is gaining a huge following by the people who reflect the message and value of HOUSE MUSIC. Camouflage has also played in Minneapolis, Los Angeles, San Diego, New Mexico, Arizona, San Jose, Chicago, Oregon and WMC Miami since being in the USA.

CHFM has also hosted many parties at SXSW and WMC in the USA and throw parties in EUROPE and around the globe. With the success of this, CHICAGO HOUSE FM Records began with his partner and wife. CHFM records have been putting out releases based on new talent and passion as well as growing the scene in respect to the ethics of HOUSE MUSIC. Camouflage has also started a second label KEEP IT REAL HOUSE MUSIC which aims at bringing out talents in as he started with production and to just grow the talent into positive and powerful producers to make an impact for themselves and those around them.

In many ways, Camouflage is all about the HOUSE music, dedicating every second he has to growing and projecting the positive vibe of the music, the self-awareness and growth potential it has when you believe in it. House Music and CHFM are not about a specific lifestyle or trend but rather a way of life to actively shape your lifestyle to be the best you can be at it.

House Head Speaks: March of this year, I had the pleasure of an encounter with Camouflage at the Fiasco event here in Chicago. This gent really loves House Music. As we chatted, he was so open and passionate about Chicago House FM, the scene, himself as a DJ/Producer. It was refreshing to speak with someone who you can call your House brother and mean it. This set he did for this feature is awesome. Love the combination of Funky, Soulful and just a touch of Jackin House. Camouflage has been doing wonders for the CHFM brand as well as spreading the love for House worldwide. As we celebrate DJ’s who own or host online shows, we welcome Camouflage and feature him this month. This House Head Has Spoken!!

House Head Speaks: There is a saying, “You Learn Something New Everyday”. That holds true about the House scene. You discover new and exciting things about this genre. This holds true when Molly Bass were featured on H2S On-Live at Undergroundhouse.tv. This woman has been on my radar for over a year by a dear friend and heavy support of House. Since I was not familiar with the Ghetto House/Juke genre, I waited until I knew more about it. During that time, I checked out some of Molly tracks and were blown away by her creativity. When I saw her live at a Chicago venue, I knew she had to be a guest on my show. She delivered and received a great deal of love. H2S is proud to feature this incredible woman and soon to be an incredible producer! This House Head Has Spoken!!

This House Head speaks about a House genre that has the word “underground written all over it.” My take on Ghetto House/Juke is Hip House on Speed. When I first heard DJs like Rob Bass, Mr. Lee and Tyree Cooper blend House with Hip Hop; I thought it was the coolest thing ever. As Hip Hop begins its downward spiral, it hurt the Hip House genre in a major way. That change when Cajmere came out with the famous track “Its Time For The Percolator”. Someone came with the idea of using those beats with sexual lyrics. Thus the birth of Ghetto House but what is it really.

Wikipedia have this to say: Ghetto house, or booty house, is a type of Chicago House which started being recognized as a distinct style from around 1992 onwards. It features minimal 808 and 909 drum machine-driven tracks, and sometimes sexually explicit lyrics.

Using the template of classic Chicago House music (primarily, “It’s Time For The Percolator” by Cajmere) and adding the sexual lyrics. It has usually been made on minimal equipment with little or no effects. It usually features a “4-to-the-floor” kick drum (full sounding, but not too long or distorted) along with Roland 808 and 909 synthesised tom-tom sounds, minimal use of analogue synths, and short, slightly dirty sounding (both sonically and lyrically) vocals samples, often repeated in various ways. Also common are 808 and 909 clap sounds, and full “rapped” verses and choruses.

Juke or Chicago Juke: The 2000s saw a rise in Chicago Juke, a faster variant of Ghetto House which began forming in the late 1980s. Chicago Juke songs are generally around 150-160 BPM] with kick drums, usually in a One-And-Two A-And-Four style pattern, pounding rapidly (and at times very sparsely) in syncopation with crackling snares, claps, and other sounds reminiscent of old drum machines. The production style is often markedly low-fi, much like Baile Funk. Chicago Juke evolved to match the energy of footwork, a dance style born in the disparate ghettos, house parties and underground dance competitions of Chicago.

In my opinion about Ghetto House/Juke is fun way to let it all hang out on the dance floor. You get to witness women doing the booty dance and guys are right behind them. It is not sexiest or disrespect just dirty, sexy, booty awesomeness. There are times you just want to do something out of the House norm. There were a few occasions I saw the impact of Ghetto House and Juke. At the House of Sol last year, Gantman had everyone doing the booty dance. It was a thing of beauty. The other time was my birthday event at Grandbar. Ghetto House pioneer DJ Funk had the entire dance floor bananas! H2S On-Live recently gave the viewers a Ghetto House education when Ghetto Division’s Molly Bass was on the show. There are times music genres reach a certain peak and drop out of sight. If DJs/Producers of this genre continue creating ways of shaking our butts, Ghetto House would be a House mainstay. This House Head Has Spoken!!

Alex Mr. Latin House Bio….

Born In Chicago, Illinois, On The West Side (Pilsen-Little Village), My Sons Anthony (Navy Diver), Julian Almaguer (Jayzoo), My Daughters, Giavanni (Gia Gia), Daniella (Danni Girl) and My Wife, Valerie Castillo-Almaguer….. Ever Since I remember growing up in the Pilsen /Little Village area, I wanted to be a DJ. Back in the days at Marshall Square, General Wood & Little Village Boys Club when The Battle of the DJs was hot and 90.5 FM WCYC was heard on every radio and car stereo. I have been in/out, left and returned the DJ game and few times. For over 20 years, I wondered can I be mentioned as the best DJ or just good enough to please those who love Freestyle, Chicago House, & Any Music we enjoyed back in the day.

I would like to thank my backbone, my life, my wife, Valerie Castillo-Almaguer, for being my air, my love, my best friend, my greatest accomplishment. She is my legs beneath me. without her, I could not have taken those steps back towards music. I love her and would do anything for her. To my children who have been very supportive in my life. You are my blessing and I love you dearly (Gia, Anthony, and Daniella & Julian). To my friends and fellow DJs: You have been there through the highs and lows of my life. I thank you for everything you have done to help me in my journey.

Today I am the host of Slammin Saturdays, an internet radio station on Chi-Town Music Radio.com

I was given the chance to have my own show because of 2 men, Peter Aparicio & Adam Rock Martinez. Without them none of this is possible. Today I host my show along with Mark Matras. I have been doing internet radio for about 18 months now. My goal for my internet radio station is to showcase Chicago’s best DJs. My intentions for the show are great. This past February, I celebrated one year anniversary for Slammin Saturdays, which was a great success. Without the listeners and supporters, there would be no show. I thank you and hope to continue my success with my co-host Mark Matras. The spotlight and the road ahead are bright and wide open. I would like to thank everyone who has a part in my life and my success. I will continue my best to make Chitown Music Radio and Slammin Saturdays as one of the Hottest Shows On The Net.

House Head Speaks: There are times when you have to trust your friends in choosing a feature DJ. DJ Semaj has been on H2S radar for quite sometime. He is a unusual cat when it comes to his track selection. He brings some great music toward his genre of House. Even though his style of House is Tribal and Gospel, I choose to feature his Latin House mix. It had some awesome tracks that you will enjoy and dance your butt off. You can check out DJ Semaj June 6, 2013 on H2S On-Live at Undergroundhouse.tv. This House Head Has Spoken!!

This House Head speaks about a past article use in the present. The article called “DJs: If you want it, you better take it!” It mentioned certain “House figures” out to prevent any unknowns their chance in the spotlight. Today, there are DJs along with promoters who are making their own mark by throwing parties and events they create. There are events in Chicago such as Spork at Smartbar; Soul Therapy events; Strictly House at Exit; United House at Tiger’s and others coming soon.

These parties and events are unique for they share a united front between DJs and/or promoters. They allow freedom to invite guest DJ/Producers they admire and organize the event from start to finish. One thing I notice is their experience and use of Social Media to promote these events. They allow their followers and other House lovers an opportunity to mark their calendars. Even though they are monthly events, it gives the resident DJ or promoter enough time to create a unique theme with an incredible lineup.

When I attended the Spork event at Smartbar, the one thing that stuck with me was the incredible support they received from their peers. More so than any other party. Residents T Mixwell and Karl Almaria are the biggest and most underrated DJ/Producers in Chicago. Spork made everyone take notice. The place was packed and the energy was on overload. It was their debut and they did not disappoint. Their next event will be on March 29th.

Strictly House is a unique event because of the venue! Exit has been a Chicago staple and it is known for its Rock, Punk and New Wave affairs. When I heard they were a House event there, I loved the idea. Exit has that gritty and grimly feel when you walk in. Their second floor is a great spot for a House event. Tru/Dar who promotes this monthly event is very detail with their lineup, guest and area as a whole. Their resident DJs Mark Matras and Louie Gomez may not carry a big name but their followers are present every time. The energy is toxic and addicting. One of the few places you are actually coming for the music and guest DJ for the evening. On April 12th DJ/Producer Andre Harris will be the guest for this 3rd installment.

I am not for certain if any of these DJs/Producers and/or promoters read the “DJs: If you want it, you better take it” article that was published on October 19, 2011. If they did, I am thrill they follow through and create their own events and put their stamp on the New Wave of Chicago House. If they did not read it, it is cool. I am still thrill they allow themselves to have a say on how a House party should jump off. For those who are thinking of following suit, just do it. You too could be the talk of House scene! This House Head Has Spoken!!

House Head Speaks: The way DJ Lena was discovered was nothing short of WOW!! Through another DJ was I discovered some time also, he directed Lena towards H2S Women of House Project. She posted her set and it was impressive. The next thing I know she has a Monday show with Undergroundhouse.tv. It was the right place at the right time with Lena but it was her track selection along with her famous “Emulator” that sealed the deal. We are so thrilled to her this Detroit native as our DJ Discovery! This House Head Has Spoken!!

I learned how to work the decks after a chance meeting with Chicago DJ Thelonious Funk in ’06 turned into an offer of free lessons. I soon decided to spend months of highly focused listening to the most classic 70′s/80′s Disco tracks and 80′s House tracks so that I could gain a substantial understanding of the basic elements of House Music: The various samples, instruments, vocals, arrangements, sound efx, drum patterns, keys and drum machines. I began to hear the music in a different way… being able to hear those classic elements used, referenced, echoed, sampled and/or simply hinted at in 90′s House right up to the most modern releases has allowed me to sink into a deeper & more meaningful connection with House Music. That summer I landed my first real gig at Victor Hotel and I have spun at various Chicago clubs, parties and event ever since.

In the spring of 2008 I began the first of a few national/international radio residencies. My first home was on WCRX 88.1 FM Chicago’s ‘Masters In The Mix’ program, where as one of their most played DJs I submitted a 30-minute live underground House mix every single week for over 3 years. In 2009 I began to be featured on the streaming-video House Music site NewAgeSoul.com, where I gained many listeners while developing a dynamic & unique visual style. On March of 2010 I won the ‘In Soul We Trust’ DJ Competition with over 1900 votes. I was also invited to become one of 40 team members of the now-defunct ‘Traxsource OneUnderground’.

In October of 2010 I created the live streaming-video site www.Undergroundhouse.tv so that I could feature a blend of different styles of underground House Music mixed by DJs from around the world. This is where I continue to develop my personal style, and along with a team of great DJs, is my base of operations for spreading underground House vibes around the world. Alongside our quality weekly resident DJs and our guest DJ show ‘H2S On-Live: Chicago House Experience’, each month we present established as well as up-and-coming guest DJ/Producers from Chicago and beyond. From 2012 to 2013 we have featured Trevor Vichas, Gene Hunt, DJ Jes, Louie Gomez, The Almaria Brothers, Scrubfish, CZBoogie, Andrew Emil and more…. with more to come!

I was a former guitarist in various Chicago rock bands (Bodhisattva, Octopussy) and former co-owner of Chicago underground rock label ‘Urban Legends Records’ (The Wesley Willis Fiasco, Trailer Hitch). I am lucky to have finally immersed myself in my passion, that thing I have been looking for the entire time without realizing it was always there in the background, waiting for me to become one with it…. UNDERGROUND HOUSE MUSIC. Now every time I get behind the decks, I am making up for lost time….. For bookings contact djspencechicago@gmail.com or undergroundhouse.tv.info@gmail.com

House Head Speaks: Spence: Chicago is like a box of chocolates You never know what he may give you on a given night. At times he will bring his soulful, feel good House or may just come out raw, nasty and just beat the decks. There is no doubt this cat knows his way around the decks. His Undergroundhouse.tv is a format where he and a lineup of DJs can express themselves openly. His believes visual expression and audio expression are keys of having a great show. Spence bring those elements every time he is online. Most people may think Online Radio shows are not important. Allow me to enlighten you. When you are on the net banging out a set, your followers and the world are watching and listening. Your set need to be on point. It could be the difference between landing that possible gig or someone else taking that spot. As part of the UGHTV family with H2S On-Live: Chicago House Experience, I am honor to feature our fearless leader as DJ of the Month! This House Head Has Spoken!!

It’ll Do Nightclub – Dallas, TX

I often heard Dallas referred as, “The Little Chicago”. It is no wonder; as I entertained the thought watched our scene flourish in the general uprising of electronic music. As my aural palette turned more towards the funky, organic, Chicago house sound over that time, however, I was not entirely feeling the strength of that comparison anymore. We have our local house legends that do their best to keep it alive but this is not an easy task in a city that so intensely adores the techno and deep tech (two other genres that I cannot help but love, myself). For me, Chicago is House!

When I started playing this music, it became obvious I would have to seek it out more frequently in other cities and venues. Last year I spent a good majority of my time abandoning the traditional 9-5 employment route and bounced around from place to place searching for my sound and that feeling; I kept hearing so much about. Finally I found myself in Chicago, at Smart Bar on Derrick Carter’s “Queen” night. The place was packed; friends and people from all walks of life everywhere and Honey Dijon was murdering the crowd…DC was not any less relentless. I danced for eight hours straight. My feet still have not forgiven me. I was beyond bummed have to leave and get on a plane four hours later to return home.

A few days later, it was time to get out into the Dallas scene again. I will admit…I was still a little depressed to have left Chicago. I did not even want to go out but Miguel Migs and Lisa Shaw were at this little place called It’ll Do on its opening night and I was getting cabin fever already.

I walked up to this odd place somewhere just on the edge of the barrio and a trendy new bar/ restaurant neighborhood. The parking lot was packed, the sound rumbled as the doors opened and closed. I was pumped!! Old heads, new heads, preps, trannies, junkies, uptown girls…everyone was there, loving the music and dancing their butt off in this dark room of nothing but sound. It gave me goose bumps!!

I cannot say for sure what that building used to be, but it is one big room: bleacher-type seats along the two walls, bar in the back, no tables, no bottle service, no dress-code, no fancy lights aside from glowing dance floor tiles, and a disco ball. I would think plenty of sequins and roller skates were worn there many years before, but no matter…I have found my little Chicago in Dallas. Since that night, I had the opportunity to witness legendary house locals (It’ll do resident: DJ Red Eye, Brett Johnson, Demarkus Lewis), Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, Honey Dijon, DJ Heather, and Colette come through this funky little place. I do not bother checking the schedule half of the time anymore; I can just show up trusting I will get the most elated feeling when I walk in the door. I would like to thank Brooke Humphries and Scottie “DJ Red Eye” Canfield for making it all happen. House Love!
