Every first Saturday of the month, a new “Hidden Gem” exists intended to relieve and heal your soul. Originally entitled by DJ Ntyse, “Soul Therapy” can be found at Lokal in the Wicker Park area. For over a year, this “treatment” continues to deliver new and outstanding music for the House audience. Using his experience as a DJ with a group called Basement, Inc., Teks Boogie has been giving an opportunity to control exactly who and what he wants to play for his House listeners. Put together by DJ Source One, Basement Inc, comprised of many talented DJs including, Philosophee, Jackin Andy, and Mero to name a few. Whether it was playing in someone’s house, backyard, or rooftop these talented DJs took every opportunity to share their gift with as many people and places as possible.
“…it’s what I think a house night should be in Chicago, booking DJs that I would want to see and hear representing Chicago without any politics…”
Teks Boogie takes his selection of DJs and venue locations very seriously. He attempts to be personal with his audience every chance he gets. In addition to providing an excellent selection of music, he’ll bring extra equipment for those “just in case moments,” or you may find him clearing off a table for patrons and supporters. At Lokal, not only has Teks been able to provide a good relationship with the people but also with the establishment. For example you can find the owner Art, or the bartenders who make a valiant effort to acknowledge customers, “feeling” the energy of the music, nodding their heads back and forth, dancing and grooving to the music.
“…I think a friendly relationship with the customers is another thing. Some venues have lost a genuine touch of reality and respect when it comes to the patrons, the same person I just tipped to pour my drink is trying to take it from me at the end of the night and force me out…”
Teks Boogie has been offering these therapy sessions for over a year now, with a core consist of himself, Jazzylite, Zonum, and Mathis “Mega M.” Rousseau. You will find these DJs staying true to themselves, not limiting their freedom of expression, and offering a wide selection of original music. Any given night, all DJs could be playing the same “genre” of House Music, but each one would deliver the music in their own individual and unique style never affect the energy or the flow of the music. House Music definitely goes “all night long” with a multitude of guest DJs, from new to older, that could include ED9, Owl, Pablo Alejandro, Louie Gomez, Jackin Andy, Justin Nemesis, Eddie A., Sativa, Steve Melvage, Brian Gardner, Diz, Michael Serafini, Julius The Mad Thinker or Mel Hammond to name a few.
There’s a small dance floor available but plenty of room to enjoy the setting – from the virtual fireplace to the display of 45’s behind the DJ area. In addition to Polish beer on tap and a choice of other imports, as well as food that is well prepared and presented, “Soul Therapy” at Lokal is a change of pace, for those who want current House music for every day listening. You can find your session every first Saturday of the month and coming soon to Zhou B. Art Center.
“In my mind, when you put your name on a bill, whether it’s your DJ name or your crew’s name, people remember and relate your name to the experience they had that night…”
